From SHOW ME
The telephone on the desk rang shrilly, making Kay jump. Calling this late at night ... who? Gavin, maybe? He was the only one who might. Kay felt a tiny kick of anticipation. She grabbed eagerly at the phone.
But she was disappointed. It wasn't Gavin's familiar tone.
The voice she heard was distorted somehow, a mechanical echo. "I saw you before," it said. "On the street that night when you were acting dirty with your top off. I saw your ..."
At first, Kay had to strain to understand the grotesque voice. What was it saying? Then it hit her. Kay stiffened in shock at what she heard. It took another second for the full meaning of that last vulgar word to sink in.
The unnatural voice said, "I want to see them again. I want you to get them out for me. Show me!"
Kay was too stunned to say anything. The breath had been sucked out of her chest. Her lips trembled on empty air.
"Show me!" the voice lashed at her.
Kay made a garbled noise in her throat and jerked the phone away from her ear. She slammed down the receiver in its craddle and her hand flinched back like the phone was a poisonous thing.
She sat frozen where she was, staring at it, terrifed the instrument would suddenly scream its shrill ring at her again. The phone stayed mute and innocent on the desk.
